Five for Friday AND an amazing nomination!

This week had its ups and downs. For the most part, it was a great week. The kiddos soaked up all my lessons. Gotta love that!

I've linked up with Doodbugs for Five for Friday.

Here are my 5 random things for the week.

I lost two students this week. My heart hurts. My students become apart of me. I miss them so much when they leave. Our class is saddened by their absence. To help have closure I had my kiddos make each student something they could remember us by.

Science this week was a hit. It was all about volume. The kiddos couldn't get enough of figuring out an object's volume. Love it!

I saw this project on Pinterest and I had to try it. I love how it turned out!

We also had a lot of fun with fractions! This was a Valentine's Day Fraction Task Card activity. The kiddos wanted to do more. As if 20 task cards weren't enough?! I love that ask for more math! You can find this activity for free {here}.

I'm truly honored to be nominated for the Liebster Award. It made my whole week! The Liebster award is handed out to newer blogs. Liebster is a German word that means: BELOVED, CUTE, LOVELY, DEAREST, & WELCOME!

I was nominated by Sarah. She is from the blog, Chicken Soup for the Autism Teacher's Soul. She nominated me for my post about kindness. You can read it {here}.

Get Your Kindess On Linky Party

Being Kind
It is something that we should all do every minute of everyday. Seriously! JUST BE KIND!
Be kind.
My classroom had a very hard time being kind to one another earlier this week. It hurt my heart, A LOT. The bickering, the dirty looks, the snooty attitudes. I don't know why there was a sudden change, but it had to be stopped. Insert me scrambling to find kindness activities.

Insert me creating a new product that the kiddos absolutely loved.Click the picture to get your copy.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Get-Your-Kindess-On-Kindess-Packet-and-Craftivity-1104357

This product is full of bright, cheerful, meaningful posters and activities. This is surly a great way to get your kiddos to be kind! I printed out the kindness poem posters. We recite the poems each morning.

Included in the product is a link to one of Kid President's videos. My kiddos really connect with Kid President. We watch his video each morning to remind us of how to be kind.

I've included a fun activity to go along with his video. I've also included  SO SO cute poster! I saw an immediate change in my class after viewing the video and completing the activities.

Next up in my kindness product is an adorable whole group craftivity.

I really wanted my kiddos to let the world know how to be kind. This is just the way to do it. I asked our talented art teacher to create a beehive. She did such an amazing job! Next up, I created little bees.

Whenever an act of kindness is bestowed upon one of my kiddos, they grab a bee (seriously how cute are they?) and write it down. I then hang the bee up by the hive. Our class goal is to have 500 bees by the end of the year!

Another great way to show the world that they are being kind is to TWEET about it.

The kiddos absolutely loved creating this adorable craftivity. It is perfect for this time of year. I'm sure your kiddos will love it just as much.

Don't forget to grab my Get Your Kindness On product. Click {here}.

Five for Friday!

I survived this week! There must of been something in the water, because classes all over campus were going crazy this week. Did anyone else have a crazy week?

I've linked up with this amazing linky party. I love love love Five for Friday. Here are my five random things from this week.

We took advantage of the beautiful Florida weather this week (northerners, don't kill me). I snapped this picture at the park. My sweet girl loves to be outside. I can't wait until I can spend all my time with her. It is so hard to have to be away from her during the day.

I might of gone a little overboard with shopping for my class. Yup, that is all for them. I use a classroom economy system. Students earn money in various ways. I host a classroom store once a month. The students have to pay me rent and then they can spend what they wish at the store. I'm hoping this will instill a sense of money responsibility for when they are older.

This was a gift from a parent. A very unexpected gift.I guess everyone knows that I am obsessed with owls. I love it!

I think I jinxed myself with my post on behavior management. You would swear that I knew nothing about behavior management on Monday and Tuesday It as awful. A.W.F.U.L. The kiddos were so mean to one another. It hurt my heart. I read Chalk One Up To The Teacher blog post about a Kindness Revolution and I just knew  had to do something like that. I created some kindness posters and had our SUPER talented art teacher create a beehive. The kiddos write an act of kindness that someone did for the on a bee. I then hang the bee by the hive. I'm going to be writing an in depth post about this. Stay tuned.

Winter Literacy Centers (ELA Common Core Aligned!)

My kiddos worked so hard in centers this week. I told them that they were completing centers made by me. They were SO excited to complete each task. Need a little extra to your centers? My center pack includes plurals, suffixes, and synonym activities. Your kiddos will have a blast completing each activity.

Well, there you have it. My five randoms from the week. How was your week? Leave a comment below.

Classroom Management

I'm SO SO SOOOO lucky to be working with such talent. Seriously, some of these teachers are my heroes. Their blog posts are going to help my classroom turn into a dream. What has been your favorite blog post so far?

Here is my little tip:

Oh boy did my class give me a run for my money at the beginning of the school year. I was asked to loop with my class from last year. Yes I had behaviors in my class last year, but I thought, "Well at least I know what I'm getting into". WRONG!!!! SOOOOO WRONG!!!! I had fourteen students last year (I know a teeny tiny class). Well two students moved and three decided not to be in my room (UGH dagger to my heart). That left me with 8 of my original. Well guess what? All the new enrollments were sent to me. Insert major catastrophe. So much for knowing what I was getting into.

Blog Post with Rudolph FREEBIES. Hang on for the next 2 days. We got this!
Ok, for real, this was everyday! It was a living nightmare!

I thought I had an awesome behavior management system in place. It ALWAYS worked for me before. I used a clip chart (of course owl themed). I let the students make the rules. I displayed those rules. We reviewed the rules. I modeled and modeled and modeled.

I integrated a classroom economy system to go along with the clip chart. If the student reached the highest color, they earned Cha-Ching! Yet, it did not work.

A Day in My Life--Funny ECard!

To thrive as a teacher you need three bones: A wish bone, A backbone and A funny bone.

I felt like I was drowning in a sea of non-compliant students. Then, just like that, I was thrown a lifesaver. I was able to finally tread water and not be in over my head. What was this lifesaver? An IG post about....

I looked at the picture and  just didn't understand what is was. I decided to Google it. The website was brilliant. It answered all of my questions. The best part, it is FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Class Dojo is a a valuable behavior management tool. If you have a projector and a phone that is capable of downloading the App, then you're all set to take the leap.

With Class Dojo, you can personalize behaviors that you want the students to be showing on a daily basis. There is also an option to record negative behaviors. Again, it is all personalized. Points that are awarded are time stamped. This will let you and the parent know when the behaviors are occurring. Speaking of parents, they have their own code to access their child's behavior. Many parents have downloaded the App on their phone and keep track of their child's behavior throughout the day.
Do you need behavior data? Not to worry! Class Dojo offers reports at the click of a button. You are able to see trends for the wee, month, and year. You can also keep track of a child's behavior compared to the rest of the class.

How did it work for me? Well, I quickly set up my class. I also quickly decided on behaviors to use. I decided to implement this new behavior management tool right away. I projected the screen with all the little monsters and kiddos' names on the board. I gave specific instructions to come in and get straight to morning work quickly and quietly. I could hear the little whispers about the board. They wondered what was on it. They wondered why I hadn't said anything about it. They wondered how I made the cute little monsters. As I observed the students, I quickly started to award points for those following directions. That first "ding" was priceless. Their faces all turned towards the board. They saw a classmate's name pop-up on the screen with the words +1 for being on task". Suddenly, it clicked! Little light bulbs started shining brightly in their minds. They all got straight to work. I could tell they were so anxious to see me give them a point.

This went on for only five minutes or so. I then showed the class the introduction video provided by Class Dojo. We met for a classroom discussion. I asked if this was something that they would be interested in trying out? I got a sea of nodding heads and grins ear to ear. I explained that I was as new to this website as they were. I asked them to bare with me on this first day. I told them to expect technical problems and to allow for human error. I told them this was a trial run and that it may not work out, but at least we were giving it a try. Again, a sea of nodding heads appeared. My kiddos were on the same page as me. Together, as a team, we dove right in!

That first day was wonderful. I took notes of what was working and what changes I needed to make. We had a class meeting at the end of the day. I asked for their opinions. All the kiddos were in agreement that this was something they wanted to continue to try. We discussed how this behavior system was going to work with the ones already in place. We decided to blend all three systems together. We would have Class Dojo, a clip chart, and our classroom economy system. I let the kiddos choose the how all three would work together. They decided that for every three green (positive) points, they would move their owl up on the clip chart. The same thing applied for the red (negative points). They also decided they wanted to receive a dollar for each green point and to owe me a dollar for each red point. We wrote all the the specifics out on a poster board and each kiddo signed it.

Now I'm not going to lye about it being all fine and dandy from then on out. Sometimes it is hard to keep up with points (even from my phone). Sometimes we have an overall 98% positive day and other days we are in the 80's. Yet, for the most part, this system has transformed my class. I would cry everyday after school. Now, I'm able to teach and enjoy my students for who they are.

Bottom Line:

*Sometimes not ONE behavior system will work. You might have to blend a few different systems together to create the classroom you want. Be flexible!
*Go to Classdojo.com to learn more about how to use this system in your classroom.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post. I truly hope that you have found it useful. I would love for you to leave some love in my comments section. Thanks again everyone.

3rd Installment of Saturday Sweets AND February Currently

Welcome to the 3rd installment of.....

My goal is to inspire other teachers' lesson plans. I know that some weeks, I just can't create the best lesson plans. I need help! So I go looking around the internet for hours. Seriously, who has time for that?! I've created this weekly link up to help other teachers with their lesson plans. I would love to hear some feedback on what you think of my linky:)!
Here are the pictures to copy into your blog post:

Before I start my example of Saturday Sweets, I'm throwing February's Currently in here real quick. I love linking up with Oh' Boy 4th Grade

Okay. Here is my example of Saturday Sweets.

Polar Bear Science Learning Center, Observation & Experime
I was lucky enough to come across this gem. It was just the experiment we needed. This packet is FREE and created by Crayonbox Learning. Check out how much fun we had....

The materials list for this experiment is SOOO easy. Salt, ice, and cups. That's my kind of experiment.I labeled the cups according to groups.I also wrote S for sat water and F for fresh water.

We measured the temperature of each cup. We found that the freshwater was about 64 degrees. The saltwater was about 48 degrees. I had the kids dip their finger in the each cup to compare the two.

***Tip for experiment*** Use timers and have a one person be in charge of the time. We dropped in our ice cubes and started our observations. The students absolutely loved watching the ice melt. They recorded their findings and wrote a synopsis of their experiment.

Centers are my pride and joy. I absolutely love creating meaningful centers. My kids beg me for center time. This week, I'm going to feature my own centers. I'm using my Winter Literacy Centers pack.

Winter Literacy Centers (ELA Common Core Aligned!)

It is easy to set up and easy to explain. In fact, instructions for the student is included. My time-saver pack includes, Snowman Synonyms, Sledding for Suffixes, and Polar Bear Plurals. I just know my kiddos are going to have a blast with these centers. Wanna grab your own pack? Click {here}
