Five for Friday!

I survived this week! There must of been something in the water, because classes all over campus were going crazy this week. Did anyone else have a crazy week?

I've linked up with this amazing linky party. I love love love Five for Friday. Here are my five random things from this week.

We took advantage of the beautiful Florida weather this week (northerners, don't kill me). I snapped this picture at the park. My sweet girl loves to be outside. I can't wait until I can spend all my time with her. It is so hard to have to be away from her during the day.

I might of gone a little overboard with shopping for my class. Yup, that is all for them. I use a classroom economy system. Students earn money in various ways. I host a classroom store once a month. The students have to pay me rent and then they can spend what they wish at the store. I'm hoping this will instill a sense of money responsibility for when they are older.

This was a gift from a parent. A very unexpected gift.I guess everyone knows that I am obsessed with owls. I love it!

I think I jinxed myself with my post on behavior management. You would swear that I knew nothing about behavior management on Monday and Tuesday It as awful. A.W.F.U.L. The kiddos were so mean to one another. It hurt my heart. I read Chalk One Up To The Teacher blog post about a Kindness Revolution and I just knew  had to do something like that. I created some kindness posters and had our SUPER talented art teacher create a beehive. The kiddos write an act of kindness that someone did for the on a bee. I then hang the bee by the hive. I'm going to be writing an in depth post about this. Stay tuned.

Winter Literacy Centers (ELA Common Core Aligned!)

My kiddos worked so hard in centers this week. I told them that they were completing centers made by me. They were SO excited to complete each task. Need a little extra to your centers? My center pack includes plurals, suffixes, and synonym activities. Your kiddos will have a blast completing each activity.

Well, there you have it. My five randoms from the week. How was your week? Leave a comment below.

  1. I found your blog through the linky and I am your newest follower. I can totally relate to going overboard and buying lots of goodies for your class. I think being a teacher that just comes with the territory!! Thanks for sharing! I can't wait to read more blog post!

    1. Hi Jamie. Happy Friday. It so goes with the territory. And it is so worth it. Some of these kids get nothing at home. This is a good chance for them to get spoiled a little.

  2. I love your idea of a classroom economy system! How do they earn the money? Such a good idea!

    1. Thanks! An economy system is easy to incorporate into a classroom. I found my money for free on TPT. Here are some ways my kiddos earn money:

*Homework (they owe me money if they don't turn it in)
*Centers (They owe me money if work is not done)
      *Good behavior (Class Dojo)
      *Good grades or improving grades

      Hope it helps. :)

  3. I hate it when the kids are mean to one another. I am lucky that I work at a private school and our school seems to have a generally kind community of kids, but every once in a while they get mean, as kids will. The worst is when the kids are down on themselves, I hate when a kid gives up or thinks that they are stupid or incapable. It breaks my heart to think that a kid has such low self esteem. :-( I love your bee hive idea. your daughter is adorable btw!

    1. Hi Tori. It makes me incredibly sad. Especially since they have to be with each other for so long. 9 whole months. That is a long time not like someone.

  5. Hi Mary-Once again, super ideas. I think the weather has such an effect on the kiddies......they expect warm dry days ....rain or cold (and this week - rain AND cold) can really set them off!
I used to have an old trunk in my classroom that was my "Pirate's Treasure Chest". Students earned "money" by bringing in good, gently used items (toys and books) that their
classmates looked forward to "buying"..........really helped out my finances when I wasn't able to find inexpensive items (and this was before the wonderful dollar stores existed).........
Enjoy being with your beautiful daughter during the upcoming long weekend!

  7. Hi Mary! I just found your blog through the linky and started following along! Good to hear you had warm enough weather to play outside! I'm in New Zealand so in the middle of summer- and can't even comprehend how cold it must be in some places over there at the moment!

I run a classroom economy too! I teach year six (the last year of primary here) and we hold a class auction at the end of each term. I think the class economy system is incredible! We've only been back at school for a week (our year runs Jan-Dec) so my new kids have only just found out about it and are busy writing their CVs for me and we'll start it in another week or two.
