Using Pic Collage to bring pictures in literature to life

On Friday, I introduced my class to one of my favorite stories. Knuffle Bunny and Knuffle Bunny Too.
The first few times I read the story, I teared up. My little one has memorized all the words. There is just something magical about these enchanting books. May it is the pictures or maybe the fact that it bring back memories of that precious toy you took everywhere with you when you were a child.

I wanted to teach my class the importance of pictures in a text. My little ones tend to not pay much attention to pictures and that in turn has them missing important things.

I read Knuffle Bunny first. I let them talk about the pictures and all the little details that helped the words come to life. I then read Knuffle Bunny Too without showing ANY pictures. They were a little confused because the author uses the pictures to help tell the story, so the words being read were choppy and all over the place. We discussed what parts were most confusing. I then showed them the pictures and they all understood the importance of looking at those pictures to help tell the whole story.

This is where technology comes in. Their goal was to add text to the pictures in Knuffle Bunny Too. They needed to think about what the author would write if there weren't any pictures in the book. I snapped pics of the illustrations and uploaded them to a folder in Edmodo. The kids were able to access these pics through Edmodo. They then took the pics they wanted and use the Pic Collage App to add text and style.

My kiddos LOVED this project. They were so creative. The text they added were right on target. Some of them even made a whole new story using the pictures from the book. I love that they were able to take their learning to a new level! Here is a quick example.

I hope this tip was helpful! Thanks for stopping by.

  1. What a cool idea for using Pic Collage. It is one of my go-to favorite apps, too.

  2. I love this idea too! Do you group the kiddos? Did they have to put text to all the pictures? I have 2nd graders and love the idea of using Pic Collage for inferring and drawing conclusions.

    1. For this project, I didn't. I had my high ones do it for as many as they wanted. My lower ones only had to do 2.

  3. This is such a great idea! I never thought of using Pic Collage in that way. I think I will use it like this when we study characters' dialogue next time. Thanks for sharing!
